Historical and Architectural Description of the Abbey of Montescalari Founded before 1040, the Abbey of Montescalari is situated on the summit of Mount Scalajo, also known as Montescalari for its staircase-like shape. The abbey served as a stop and refuge for travelers along the Cassia Adrianea, facilitating journeys between Chianti and Valdarno, Vallombrosa.
Structure and Architecture
It has a Latin cross plan, thanks to subsequent expansion works. A Robbian terracotta coat of arms, visible above the main portal and dated 1505, represents a significant element of the complex.
Description of the Abbey Complex
Today, it presents itself as a large quadrilateral. It includes the abbey church, the cloister, two farmhouses, and a forest area of 1,000 hectares. Various buildings have been added over time, maintaining the historical structure while integrating new elements.
